Why Blog?

I decided to start blogging after a three hour late night googling of “siblings raising siblings.” The search came up short… practically an untapped subject. The big one was A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers. Besides that there was a Times article from 2001, an NPR radio interview from 2012, and some grief forums. The little bit I found- barley brushed the surface. How do teen siblings handle the transition from sister to parental figure? What do I need to know about the twins testing boundaries with our new relationship? Can I play both big sister and parent? Not to mention the legal process of making it all official, finances, missing my dad while being strong for the twins, juggling my romanic relationship and close friendships. How do people do this? I’m not alone. I know other big brothers and sisters have done this. However, I couldn’t find their stories. That is when I decided to share ours.

I am Isabel. In 2014, when I was 26, I became the lucky guardian of my little brother and sister, Jasper and Poppy, then 14- they’re twins. We also live with our middle sister Charlotte, 22 when this all started. We hope you enjoy our adventure of Sibs Raising Sibs.

New post are now every Tuesday!

  2. Hey Isabel! Not sure if you participate in these things or not, but I nominated you for a One Lovely Blog Award. I don’t normally do these things, but I thought this is a great way to give a shout out to some of my favourite blogs. You can see my post on mine! It’s not a push for you to participate – do or don’t! 🙂 Happy Friday!

  4. I am the older sister (24) of twins (15) and our 1 middle brother (18). Our parents are divorced. Alcohol and drug dependent, and unable to care for the twins due to their issues. My husband and I have been parenting the twins full time since August 2014, and just recently legally adopted them through Fostercare. I am so happy to see that other people like us exist! I am looking forward to reading more about your experiences and hopefully learning from you a bit! Thank you!

  5. I’ve never raised any siblings. I was a sibling sort of raised by my sister. When I was two my dad got in a terrible car acident and ended up hadicapped. My oldest sister (14 at the time) came home to my mom being to depressed to raise us, my oldest sister took care of my our middle sister, my twin and me. She raised us for the next couple years. She ened up moving out and living on her own caus emy parents werenr being nice about being pregant at 16. My twin and I ended up at her house alot for the next few years. She still takes care of me to this day. I’m 19 now and she is the one of the most special poeole to me.
