  1. I did not know that this was a thing! I stumbled across your video on buzzfeed. Together, with my husband, I am raising my younger brother. He was adopted by my parents in 2010. I was 18. He was about to be 8. He came into their home through foster care. Then almost 3 years later I got a call from my dad. “Things are not working out. We cannot control him. I’m going to call our social worker to come pick him back up.” My brother is diagnosed ADHD, bi-polar disorder, and PDD-NOS (Autism spectrum). When I got the call that my brother was going to be taken away, I was devastated. I immediately told my dad, “Don’t call the social worker. Let him stay with us for a little while. We need to exhaust all our options before we give up on this boy”. At this point, Andy (at that time his name was legally Cevero) was only 10 years old. I was moved out and married- getting ready to celebrate my 2nd wedding anniversary. And now, I was fully responsible for a whole other living, breathing person. We’ve had custody of Andy for just over 2 years now and it has been a roller coaster. We had to learn really quickly how drastically your relationship changes when you go from “Fun big sis, who takes you out to get ice cream” to “caregiver who just grounded you because you put the cat in the freezer”. (Calm down, PETA, he survived and is fully recovered.) But now here we are, 2 years later, happy as ever. We are currently in the proccess of making this official. We’re adopting! My life changed that day that I got that phone call. Not exactly how I planned my journey to motherhood, but I wouldn’t change it for the world.
